The Tesla Model Y, a pure electric mid-size SUV, became the world’s best-selling car in the first quarter of 2023, according to data from 53 markets and estimates for others. The Model Y sold 267,200 units, surpassing the Toyota Corolla sedan, wagon, and hatchback, which sold 256,400 units. The Model Y was also the third best-selling car in 2022, behind the Toyota RAV4 and Corolla.
The Model Y’s success is driven by its popularity in China, its core market, as well as strong growth in the United States and Europe. Tesla has also reduced the prices of its cars and expanded its global presence. The Model Y offers versatile seating and storage for up to seven passengers, a range of up to 330 miles on a single charge, and access to Tesla’s Supercharger network1. Tesla CEO Elon Musk predicted that the Model Y would become the best-selling new vehicle in the world in 2023.
