Volkswagen Gigafactory in Canada
Volkswagen Group's PowerCo SE plans to build its largest gigafactory in St. Thomas, Ontario, with an annual capacity of up to 90 GWh. The investment of up to €4.8 billion (CAD$7 billion) could create up to 3,000 direct jobs and tens of thousands of indirect jobs in the region. The St. Thomas gigafactory will produce cutting-edge unified cells for Volkswagen's electric vehicles in North America, with construction starting in 2024 and production in 2027. The factory is part of Volkswagen's larger plan to expand PowerCo SE's battery cell production network and promote e-mobility in Canada.
